Most falls happen at home — and most are preventable

Here is a fact worth sitting with: the majority of falls involving older adults happen in their own homes, doing ordinary things. Not on icy sidewalks or hiking trails — in the bathroom, on the stairs, getting out of a chair, walking to the kitchen at night. And most of those falls trace back to a short list of fixable hazards: poor lighting, loose rugs, missing grab bars, cluttered walkways, and stairs without good handrails.

A home safety assessment is a professional walkthrough of your home to find those hazards before they find you. We go room by room, take notes, and give you a prioritized list of practical fixes — from the free (move that cord) to the worth-paying-for (a stairlift, grab bars, better lighting). No scare tactics, no pressure. Just a clear-eyed look at your home through a safety lens.

What we look at

We start at the stairs, because stairs are the highest-risk feature in any multi-level home: handrail condition and placement, lighting at top and bottom, tread condition, clutter on the steps, and whether a stairlift or additional railing makes sense. Then the bathrooms — statistically the most dangerous room in the house: tub and shower entry, grab bar placement, toilet height, floor slipperiness when wet, and lighting.

Bedrooms get checked for the nighttime path: is the route from bed to bathroom lit? Is there a clear, uncluttered walkway? Is the bed at a height that allows safe sitting and standing? The kitchen review covers reach and bending: are daily items stored where they can be reached without a step stool or deep bending? Are there secure places to sit while cooking? Living areas get a trip-hazard sweep: rugs, cords, furniture placement, pet toys, and lighting levels.

Outside, we look at entry steps, porch lighting, walkway condition, and handrails — because the path from the car to the front door matters as much as anything inside.

What you get

A written report, prioritized. Not a 40-page binder — a clear list grouped by urgency: do-now safety issues, smart-soon improvements, and nice-to-have upgrades. Each item has a plain-English explanation of why it matters and what the fix looks like. Where the fix is something we do (stairlifts, for example), we quote it. Where it is not (an electrician for lighting, a handyman for grab bars), we describe exactly what to ask for so you can get it done confidently.

We also flag what is already good. Most homes have real strengths — a well-placed railing, a sensibly laid-out bathroom — and you should know what is working, not just what is not.

Who this is for

Anyone planning to age in place who wants a professional second opinion on their home's readiness. Adult children worried about a parent living alone — an assessment gives you facts instead of worries, and a concrete list instead of vague concern. People recovering from a fall who want to make sure it does not happen again. And anyone considering a stairlift who wants the full picture first: sometimes the stairs are the main issue, and sometimes the assessment reveals that the bathroom needs attention too.

There is no age requirement and no health questionnaire. If you live in the home and want it safer, that is qualification enough.

What this is not

Two honest boundaries. First, we are stairlift and home-safety specialists, not medical professionals. We assess your home, not your health — we will not diagnose conditions, recommend treatments, or comment on medications. If something we see suggests a conversation with your doctor (like repeated dizziness on the stairs), we will say so and leave the medical judgment to them.

Second, this is not a sales ambush. The assessment is a standalone service with its own straightforward fee, quoted in writing before we visit. If we recommend a stairlift, it is because your stairs genuinely warrant one — and you are free to take our report and do nothing, hire someone else, or call us back in six months.

Our process

Step one: call or send the form to schedule. Step two: we visit — typically an hour, room by room, inside and out — asking questions about how you actually live in the home. Step three: within a few days you receive the written report with prioritized recommendations. Step four: we walk through it with you by phone or in person, answering questions. Step five: you decide what to do, on your timeline. If you want us to handle the stairlift portion, we will quote it; the rest is yours to arrange as you see fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a home safety assessment take?

Usually about an hour for a typical home — a room-by-room walkthrough inside and out, with questions about how you live day to day. Larger homes take a bit longer. You receive the written report within a few days.

Is this a medical evaluation?

No. We assess your home, not your health. We are stairlift and home-safety specialists, not medical professionals — we will not diagnose conditions or recommend treatments. If we notice something worth mentioning to your doctor, we will say so.

Do I have to buy anything afterward?

No. The assessment is a standalone service with its own fee, quoted in writing before we visit. The report is yours to act on however you choose — do it yourself, hire someone else, or call us for the stairlift portion.

I am worried about my parent who lives alone. Is this useful?

Very. An assessment replaces vague worry with specific facts: exactly which hazards exist, how serious each is, and what fixes them. It is also much easier to discuss with a parent than abstract concern — you are working from a professional report, not nagging.

What are the most common hazards you find?

Poor lighting (especially stairs and the bedroom-to-bathroom path), loose rugs and cords, bathrooms without grab bars, stairs with missing or wobbly handrails, and cluttered walkways. Nearly every home has two or three of these — and nearly all are fixable.

Can you install the fixes you recommend?

We install stairlifts — that is our specialty. For other fixes like grab bars, lighting, or handrails, the report describes exactly what to ask a handyman or electrician for, so you can get competitive quotes confidently.
