The simplest answer for a straight staircase

If your staircase runs straight from bottom to top with no turns and no intermediate landing, a straight stairlift is what you need. It is the most common type of stairlift, the quickest to install, and the most straightforward choice you will make in this whole process. The rail is a straight length cut to fit your stairs. The chair rides up and down it. That is the whole idea, and it works beautifully.

Most Tampa Bay homes with straight stairs fall into a few familiar shapes: the single straight flight in a two-story home, the split-level ranch where a half-flight leads to the bedrooms, the townhome staircase, and the straight run down to a finished garage or bonus room. If that sounds like your stairs, you are in straight-stairlift territory.

How a straight stairlift fits your home

The rail mounts to your stair treads — not the wall — with support brackets every few steps. Because straight rails come in standard lengths that we cut to your exact measurement, there is no factory wait and no custom engineering. We measure your staircase during the free assessment, and on installation day the rail goes up, the chair goes on, and you are riding it the same afternoon.

The chair itself folds up when not in use. The seat flips up, the footrest folds, and the armrests tuck in — leaving your staircase open for everyone else in the household to walk up and down normally. This matters in busy homes: the grandkids, your spouse, visitors — nobody is blocked by the lift when it is parked.

Features that come standard

Every straight stairlift we install includes the features that actually matter day to day. A seatbelt, because safety is not optional. A swivel seat that turns at the top landing so you get off facing the hallway, not the staircase — this is the feature customers thank us for most. Obstruction sensors that stop the chair if anything is on the stairs. A key switch so the lift cannot be operated by curious grandchildren. And battery backup, so the lift keeps working through a power outage and always parks at a charging point.

Remote controls come in the box too — one for the top of the stairs, one for the bottom. If two people in the home use the lift, or if you send the chair back down after riding up, the remotes make it easy. They are simple: an up button and a down button, big enough to use without reading glasses.

What about narrow or steep stairs?

Two questions we hear on nearly every assessment. First: "Are my stairs too narrow?" Stairlifts need surprisingly little width. When the chair is folded, the whole unit hugs the wall side of the staircase and most staircases still allow a person to walk past. We measure your stair width during the assessment and will tell you honestly if it is too tight — it rarely is.

Second: "Are my stairs too steep?" Tampa Bay has plenty of steep stairs, especially in older bungalows and cottages. Stairlifts handle standard residential stair angles without trouble. What matters more than steepness is head clearance and a clear path — we check both, and we flag anything unusual before you spend a dollar.

Renting vs. buying a straight stairlift

Because straight rails are standard lengths rather than custom-built, straight stairlifts are also the easiest to rent. If you need a lift for a few months — recovering from surgery, hosting an aging parent for the season — renting a straight unit is simple and affordable. See our stairlift rental page for how that works. If this is a long-term need, buying is the better value, and a well-maintained straight lift lasts for many years.

Our process

Step one: you call or send the form, and we schedule a free in-home assessment — usually within a few days. Step two: we visit, measure your staircase from top to bottom, check width, headroom, and electrical access, and talk through chair options with you. Step three: you get a written estimate with the full installed price — no hidden fees, no surprises. Step four: if you approve, we schedule installation, usually within a week. Most straight stairlifts install in one visit of a few hours. Step five: we test everything with you, show you and your family how to operate it, and leave you our direct number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my staircase is straight?

Stand at the bottom and look up. If you can see the top landing in one straight line with no turns, corners, or flat landings in the middle, your staircase is straight. If there is a turn, a landing halfway, or a fan-shaped set of steps, you likely need a curved stairlift instead — and our free assessment will confirm which one fits.

Will the stairlift block the stairs for other people?

No. When parked, the seat, footrest, and armrests all fold up against the wall side of the staircase. The folded lift takes up only a few inches of stair width, so everyone else in the home can walk up and down normally.

Does a straight stairlift need a special electrical outlet?

No. The lift plugs into a standard household outlet near the top or bottom of the stairs with the included charger. The chair itself runs on rechargeable batteries, which is why it keeps working during power outages.

Can a straight stairlift be installed on carpeted stairs?

Yes. The rail brackets mount through the carpet into the stair treads beneath. Carpet does not affect the installation or the operation at all.

What happens if I move? Can I take the stairlift with me?

Straight stairlifts can often be removed and reinstalled on a different straight staircase, though the rail may need to be re-cut to the new length. We offer removal service, and we can assess whether your unit will fit your new home's stairs.

Is there a weight limit?

Standard straight stairlifts carry most adults comfortably. If you need a higher capacity, our heavy-duty stairlifts are built for larger riders — mention it during your assessment and we will match the right model to you.
