Yes, your stairlift works when the power is out
This is the first question many Tampa Bay families ask, and the answer is reassuring: modern stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries, not directly on household current. The lift charges from a standard outlet whenever it is parked, and the batteries power every ride. When a summer storm knocks out power for hours — or a hurricane takes it for days — the lift keeps working on battery power. You will not be stranded upstairs.
How the charging works
Charging points sit at the top and bottom of the rail. Whenever the chair is parked at either end, charging contacts connect and top up the batteries — automatically, silently, with nothing for you to do. This is why we constantly remind owners to park the chair at the rail end rather than mid-track: parked at the end, it charges; parked mid-track, it slowly drains.
A full charge supports many trips — far more than a typical household uses in a day. In an extended outage, the practical limit is not one evening but days of normal use. The batteries are sized for exactly this scenario.
Storm season habits
Before storm season, do a battery health check: ride the lift and notice whether it feels as strong as usual, and call us if it seems sluggish — weak batteries should be replaced before you need them most. During outage season, keep the chair parked at a charging end whenever you are not riding, so every trip starts from a full charge. If the power is out for days and you are conserving, the lift sips power — a handful of essential trips barely dents the charge.
One caution: do not use an outdoor stairlift during severe weather. The battery backup works fine, but high winds and flying debris are the danger — stay inside until the storm passes. The lift will be waiting, covered, when it is safe.
Battery lifespan and replacement
Stairlift batteries are sealed rechargeable units that typically last a few years. They fade gradually — slower rides, beeps about low charge, the lift struggling on a full trip. Replacement is one of the quickest and most affordable service visits we do, and it restores the lift to full strength immediately. If your lift is beeping about batteries as storm season approaches, do not wait — call us and we will swap them before the weather turns.
What battery backup does not do
Honest limits: batteries power the lift, not your house — the charger needs household power to recharge them, so in a multi-day outage you are running on stored charge. That stored charge is generous, but it is not infinite; conserve trips if the outage stretches on. And batteries that were already weak before the outage will underperform during it — which is why pre-season replacement matters.
