What a stairlift actually is
A stairlift is a motorized chair that carries you up and down your staircase on a rail. The rail bolts to your stair treads. The chair has a seat, armrests, a footrest, and a seatbelt. You sit down, press and hold a button on the armrest, and the chair glides along the rail to the other floor. At the top, the seat can swivel so you get off facing the landing — not the stairs.
That is the whole concept. There is no construction, no remodeling, no elevator shaft. Installation usually takes hours, not days. And when the day comes that you no longer need it, the lift comes off and your stairs go back to normal.
The two big decisions: straight or curved
This is the first fork in the road, and your staircase decides it for you. If your stairs run straight from bottom to top with no turns or landings, you need a straight stairlift — standard rail cut to length, quick installation. If your stairs turn, have a landing, or curve, you need a curved stairlift — a rail custom-built to your exact staircase. Our free assessment confirms which one fits; see our straight vs. curved comparison for the full breakdown.
The second decision is new vs. used. New lifts come with full warranties and the longest lifespan. Refurbished lifts cost less and are a solid choice when professionally rebuilt and warranted. Renting fits short-term needs like surgery recovery.
Features worth caring about
Swivel seat: non-negotiable in our opinion — it lets you exit facing the hallway safely. Battery backup: standard on quality lifts, keeps you moving through power outages. Obstruction sensors: stop the chair if something is on the stairs. Folding design: seat, footrest, and arms fold up so others can use the stairs. Remote controls: call the chair from the other floor. Key switch: prevents unsupervised use.
Nice extras include powered swivel (the seat turns itself), powered folding footrest, and heavier-duty models for larger riders. Start with the essentials; add extras that solve real problems in your home.
What the buying process looks like
A reputable purchase follows a predictable path: free in-home assessment with real measurements, a written estimate with the full price, professional installation, hands-on training, and a warranty in writing with local service behind it. Anyone who pressures you to sign on the first visit, quotes without measuring, or cannot explain the warranty plainly is telling you who they are — believe them, and call someone else.
